Over the past few years, desktop icons have gotten much snazzier than ever before because of advances in operating systems which have made them the flashiest yet. I remember the old days well. In those days, desktop icons were so plain and boring it is hard to even talk about. They were all low resolution, boxy pictures that were meant to represent various extremely simple objects, objects which they did not at all resemble. For example, your mouse cursor desktop icon would resemble some kind of low-resolution arrow. If it was loading, it would blink on and off, otherwise it would be static. And that was it. None of the other desktop icons was that much prettier, and there was little choice in customizing them. On old macs, the loading desktop icons were supposed to look like a computer thinking, if my memory serves me correctly (which it does not always do), but they barely resembled a sort of amorphous box flashing on and off in ugly gray and white.
