remote access server as a general rule05/07/2007 Remote Access: My good friend lives in Port Credit, Ontario. He works for an advertising agency that recently relocated their headquarters to the city of London, a couple of hours away. Rather than moving, having to brave the commute, or being forced to give up his job, my friend got smart. He approached his boss about working via remote access, eliminating the need for him to go in to the office on a daily basis. His boss was open to the idea, not wanting to inconvenience a good employee and she agreed to let him work from home and telecommute. The very nature of his work lends itself well to working from home. While he does go into the office on rare occasions, most of his projects and files can be transmitted by posting them to the company's FTP server. Technology today definitely makes tele-working a viable solution, allowing employees to login to the central server by remote access, rather than demanding their physical presence in the office at all times after that. Of course, there are some challenges innate to this sort of set up. Home-based workers need to be self-motivated and able to schedule their workday in an efficient and responsible way. It would be quite easy to fall into a rut of sleeping late, taking too many breaks and developing a pretty lax schedule while working from home. Employers who allow their employees to work via remote access need to see measurable results. And really, these results should be equal to or even greater than the productivity seen when the employee was located at the main office, since many distractions and interruptions will no longer impact on their day as a result. Also, these employees need to be quite technically adept to allow them to set up their home system to be in sync with the main server. This knowledge and know-how is necessary to prevent having IT staff constantly monitoring those working by remote access and having to repeatedly run back and forth between each location to trouble shoot problems. The users themselves need to be able to handle most of these occurrences on their own if what i've said is correct. My friend, like many other home-based workers, has found that working via remote access can be a very workable solution, when a business decides to move it's headquarters without a major turn-over in staff.
